Press-conference “Exotic animals’ trade in Ukraine
Press-conference “Exotic animals’ trade in Ukraine - truth and fiction” dedicated to the problematics of illegal trade of exotic animals in Ukraine was held on May 30th 2018 in Kyiv.
It was particularly important to have a look at this problem in terms of science, so the conference was attended by scientists, whose scope includes environmental protection, as well as other experts from different fields: director of I. I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of sciences, professor - Igor A. Akimov; vice-president of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs - Lyudmila Zhuk; representative of the Ukrainian Association of Zoo Industry - Oleksii Artemenko; inspector of the Kiev customs - Ruslan Vasyk; president of the Ukrainian Herpetological Society - Volodymyr Peskov and zoologist, expert of the CITES scientific body in Ukraine and the Commission on the Red Book of Ukraine - Oksana Nekrasova. Also, director of BION Terrarium Center - Dmitri Tkachev, director of the Cherkasy Zoo - Yevgeny Van and a specialist on reptiles’ breeding from Kharkiv - Sergey Prokopiev took part in the discussion. In addition to local Ukrainian specialists, it was possible to hear thoughts of an international expert in the field of nature protection and zoology from Latvia - Mihails Pupins. He dedicated his talk to the situation with pet trade in his country and the European Union, and also shared the impression of visiting the Ukrainian exotic reptiles’ breeding center – BION Terrarium Center.
